StumbleUpon Removes 200 Friends Capacity
Written by admin on August 9, 2008 – -I’m sure most, if not all, of you guys have heard of StumbleUpon. If you haven’t, it’s essentially a social media site for people to “stumble upon” websites. The more votes you get, the more traffic you’ll get. Originally, they had a 200 friend’s list capacity but apparently they removed it. Time for the spammers to come out!
SU has a bunch of spammers and spam sites on there and the more friends you have, the more chances you’ll get a vote your way. And a majority of people with thousands of followers and friends have a lot of SU power and authority.
Let’s compare this to Digg real quick. For instance, if you have thousands of followers then a simple shout to your friends could get you that many votes for a story of their choice. Now, it looks like StumbleUpon is headed in that direction as well.
The rumor about StumbleUpon is the fact that it brings in massive amounts of traffic but not quality traffic. When I say “not quality traffic” I mean most visitors stumble upon your site for a one-time occasion. SU visitors don’t subscribe, they don’t return, they don’t stay on your site very long and they don’t click around to check out other pages.
Now, it also depends on the niche of the site. For instance, I can guarantee you SU visitors wouldn’t bother staying on this site for long. But that’s because everyone hates MMO blogs anyways.
On the other hand, I have an entertainment website and someone managed to give me a thumbs up vote and then a domino affect took place. One vote led to another, then 50+ people voted and that equaled 15,000+ visitors (and counting).
I checked my stats as well and with my entertainment website, people actually stayed for a few minutes, browsed around the site, but still, no drastic affect (if any) in my RSS Feeds subscribers.
Anyways, I will not be focusing on getting SU traffic to this blog but rather SEO. And I’m sure that will help my weekly ad spot winners with click-throughs!
Good luck with the spam on StumbleUpon!

Stumble Upon can give me 700 hits sometimes in a day just from them alone…But as you said the quality of the traffic isn’t always that great - maybe out of that 700 people, 20 of them will stick around and check out the rest of the site…However, I never mind the little extra exposure and with some bloggers it’s been nice being able to do SU exchanges with them

I think this is a good change. Personaly I like StumbleUpon much better than Digg.

Honestly, I never join (yet) any of this social bookmarking service…
Maybe I just don’t realize the potential or that I am a dumb…
